Kyokushin Terminology
Kyokushin karate is a Japanese based style. Our school is traditional and Kaicho Farzinzad, as well as all of the black belt instructors, follows the Martial Way of Sosai Mas Oyama. Therefore, the classes, although taught in English, contain many Japanese words. Please see below for terminology.
Anza: Sitting position, relaxed, cross‐legged with straight back
Dan: Black belt qualification level
Dogi: Karate uniform (also called Gi)
Dojo: Martial arts school
Hajime: Start
Hanshi: Grand Master
Hidari: Left
Hikite: Movement with a shout (Kiai)
Ibuki: Breathing out technique (a long exhalation followed by a short expiration)
Kamaete: Starting position
Karate: Empty hand; Japanese martial art practiced with bare hands and feet
Karateka: Karate practitioner

Kiai: Shout to concentrate power (power explosion)
Kihon Waza: Basic techniques
Kohai: Junior student relative to one’s qualification level (Kyu)
Kumite: Fight
Kyu: Qualification level (from White belt to Black)
Mawate: Turn around
Migi: Right
Mokuso: Meditation
Naore: Return to starting position
Nidan: 2nd degree black belt
Obi: Belt
Otagai: Student
Rei: Salute
Sanda: Third Dan
Seiza: Kneeling position, fists tight on hips, straight back (for salute and meditation)
Senpai: Mentor - 1st or 2nd degree black belt.
Sensei: Teacher - 3rd or 4th degree black belt.
Shihan: Master. A 5th degree black belt.
Shodan: 1st degree black belt
Tatami: Training mat
Yamei: Stop
Yoi: Ready
Yondan: 4th degree black belt
